This country is not a perfect one, but I'll take it over anywhere else on this globe! With only one exception, there has never, in the history of the world, been a nation so blessed and so great! (The obvious exception in history would be the nation of Israel.)

We have a rich history. Our founding fathers were men who recognized the need for dependence on God and for building a nation that honored the principles of Scripture. For all the hype and bluster about the so called separation of church and state, (which is being distorted and misused to keep God out of the public square!), our founding fathers did want God in our affairs. They didn't want the government to interfere in "religion" and to mandate a State Church. There is a great organization called the Wallbuilders, led by David Barton, that gives loads of good history that is true and unrevised! Check out their website.

Part of the richness of our history includes the great sacrifices made to secure and preserve our precious freedoms. Men and women bravely fought and even gave their lives so that we could enjoy what we have today. Others gave their time, physical or mental health, and more.

My Dad was a heroic veteran as far as I am concerned! (I admit I am a bit prejudiced in the matter!) Dad served from 1952-1954 in the Korean War. He fought on the front lines at first and then was moved to driving a supply truck. I am told that was just as dangerous. After that he became a driver for an officer. One of my prized possessions is a glass encased frame with his medals in them, which he promised me before he died.

Later in life he loved to talk about his time in the service of our country. He didn't brag, but he was proud to be associated with the military and with fighting for the USA. I am thankful to have such a personal heritage.

I am also thankful to have a son that fought in Iraq for seven months as a U.S. Marine.

Tomorrow is the 232nd birthday of this great country. It was a great time of instruction, motivation, and inspiration. For nearly two years now, I have been involved in a business during my spare time for a couple of reasons... it is my way of relaxing and doing something different. Some people have hobbies, I have a part time business helping people, which I enjoy.

However, I truly missed being at LifeBridge! I love our church and I love being a part of that ministry. I am looking forward to First Wednesday and to this weekend!

Here are a couple of thoughts...

This week will be busy! We have First Wednesday service, Friday is July 4th, and I begin a brand new sermon series on Sunday! (Believer's Baptism this Sunday as well!)

That sermon series is going to seriously rock some people's world! "One Life To Give" is going to lay out some life principles that, if applied, will radically change our lives! I am not exaggerating in the least bit. You have to do everything you can to be at all four Sundays in July!

I was encouraged by the reaction and response to the One Prayer series, particularly to the three video sermons. Each pastor, Ed Young, Perry Noble, and Steven Furtick, really laid out the straight "stuff" from the Word of God! I noticed that they kept everyone's attention. Look for this to happen again sometime in the future. Please don't forget to PRAY!!!

I came home Sunday afternoon to a broken air conditioner! The central air conditioning system in our house is old and has needed replaced for some time, along with our old oil furnace. I am trying to research my options. None of them are inexpensive! If you have any good connections, I'm open to suggestions!!! It's pretty warm in here!

I have a ton of tomato plants in my back yard... somewhere around 30! When they start producing, I think I'll open a stand! Seriously, if you like tomatoes, let me know!

I am thankful for the Youth Camp in West Virginia last week! I have received great reports! Pastor Bobby tells me that it is the best one yet. Forty students, along with 15 adults, were there. The theme was prayer. They did lots of challenging activities, including hiking, frisbee golf, canoeing and kayaking, and running an obstacle course. More importantly, young lives were impacted for Christ!

Check back tomorrow for another post...

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-30T19:55:27</dcterms:modified>

Super-charge...

I debated using the word, not wanting to overstate the case.

Super-charge your spiritual growth! God uses many things to grow us to be more like His Son, Jesus...

The first event... this coming week we have our First Wednesday service at LifeBridge. Our guest speaker is Pastor Adam Nathanson, church planter and missionary in Carraccas, Venezuela. We partner by becoming a prayer warrior for them, praying specifically because we are informed. We grow when that happens. Our heart is more tenderized to those around us by experiences like that as well.

The second event... All four Sundays in July I am doing a sermon series entitled, "One Life To Give". God is brewing some truth in me from His Word that is going to change someone's life next month! I can't wait to give it out for those four Sundays.

How it helps you... Each Sunday I will share a principle that, if applied to your life, will change your whole life, drastically! I am not exaggerating! I can't wait to see what happens in some lives who will grab these principles. I already know that some will and some will not. I'm looking for the "some wills"!

God's truth, when diligently applied, will definitely super-charge your spiritual growth! It's up to you to put yourself in the position to be exposed to it. Again, I urge you to be there for all five services!!!

"but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity.

I am encouraged to see God is moving in ways that we sometimes miss.

This 27 year old, African American man is the founder of a church that meets in Baltimore. His story is amazing...

He has gone against the current of culture to start a church that is different, one that is striving to reach across cultural lines. He has paid a high price to do that, yet is determined to go forward. That is God's call in action!

In September he and his church will celebrate their three year anniversary. I have been given the HONOR of speaking at one of his celebration services.

How did we meet? This pastor did a Google search for churches that are multi-cultural friendly. He found the LifeBridge Church website on page nine of the search! After looking at our site and listening to one of my sermons, he emailed me, requesting a meeting. He felt that we had a kinship in our view of ministry and wanted to find out if I was open to "partnering".

After meeting with him today, I sincerely believe that God will teach me something through him! I know that God can use me to encourage and mentor him, but I am convinced that he can also be used of God to make me a better pastor. It will not be a one way relationship!

I respect the fact that this pastor stepped out of his comfort zone and took a risk to reach out to another pastor. I guess you have to be one to know exactly what I mean by that.

Let me try to explain what I mean and then move to a final positive statement.

The pastors I know are godly people who truly feel called to that place of service. They are not just there to ride out a "career". They care about what happens in the church they pastor.

Because they care, they never really get away from the passion, the fire, the desire to see God move and to see the church grow in every way. Any pastor that doesn't care is in the wrong place and I really am not acquainted with any like that, as far as I know.

Sundays are the big day, the culmination of the week. Many "caring" pastors measure what is happening in their church by what happens on Sunday. We do know that there is more to be considered, but it is hard not to put a lot of weight on that Sunday thing! As humans, (and we certainly aren't super-humans or super saints!), we tend to focus on the immediate statistics or the things that are said to us, especially the negative things.

There could be 10 positive things happening or said, but one negative event can sometimes wipe those out in a pastor's mind. As I said, we are human.

If the attendance is down or not growing, if the offering is short, if the sermon didn't flow the way we envisioned, and on and on, we can get discouraged. Put a few Sundays like that back to back and it really gets tough!

Chances are, the congregation may never know about our struggles, fears, or stress. We tend to keep our "stuff" to ourselves. If we are isolated from other pastors or people with whom we could have a close and open relationship, it's even worse!

I don't want to paint a picture that isn't true. What I have said is reality on a much wider scale than is realized. Yet pastors are also a resilient and determined bunch! They are there because they are called and want to be there.

It is not all doom and gloom. Being a pastor is more positive than negative and is a great blessing. Pastoring offers a challenge to be met, a mission to fulfill.

What pastors need are godly prayer warriors and encouragers. Moses had Aaron and Hur holding up his hands. (Exodus 17:10-12) He also formed a helping team at the urging of his wise father-in-law, Jethro. (Exodus 18:13-24)

You, too, can hold up your pastors' hands...

Determine to pray regularly for and with your pastors!

Ask them how you can help them, perhaps in small, practical ways. Be a willing to serve alongside them.

Let them know that you hear, understand, and buy into the vision God has given them for your church.

Make it possible for them to take time off and away to rest, be refreshed, and to re-fuel! Insist that they do that!

As a pastor for over 27 years, I would not want to do anything else! It is a privilege and honor from God to be called to pastor! I have had some tough Mondays over those years and some tough other days as well. But, I would not trade the tough days away in order to do something else!

I have been blessed with a great congregation, with fellow pastors in this church whom I dearly love and appreciate, and with many pastor friends outside my church who are sources of encouragement.

I just hope and pray that other pastors can say that! I love pastors and want to see them encouraged!!!

Sunday Night wrap up...

On this 25th weekend of 2008...

The monthly Pastors Prayer Breakfast on Saturday morning was really good! We met at Middle River Baptist Church, hosted by Pastor Don Satterwhite and his wife Marie. It was obvious to me that God is at work among us. We have been praying together now for about six years. There is a unity in the midst of diversity. NOW, it appears that God is moving us towards beginning an organization through which we can, together, reach out to the Eastern Baltimore County region. It will definitely be radically different from anything we've ever done before with our men. The theme of the event is "Running To Win". The three days will be packed with competition between 6 teams of men. They will be competing in events such as wallyball, fishing, rock wall climbing, horseshoes, etc. We will be talking about how to win in life as men who are Christ followers.

Today's worship service... a highlight in the worship music came when Anna Mayr sung that song about the cross of Christ and choked up emotionally. Jesus died to turn His followers into a united team, called the Church. During His earthly ministry Jesus worked with a team... the twelve Apostles. The Apostle Paul constantly had a ministry team surrounding him.

The Scriptures talk about how the "team" works together in different roles, with different God given skills called gifts.

I believe that the entire local church should consist of many teams. Every ministry in the church should be built around teamwork.

I also believe that, in a community, local churches should work together as a team to reach that community! Why do we tend to see each other as competition when, in reality, we are on the same "Team"?

Two suggestions...

As a member of a local church, find a team or start a team to do ministry together! Every church that accepts the Scriptures as God's inspired Word, believes we are all sinners in need of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus, our God and Savior, and is convinced that there is a real Heaven to gain and Hell to shun, should be able to cooperate in some way as a team to reach their community!!! All other differences should be overlooked for the good of the Kingdom. Some of us are going to be seriously surprised when we get to Heaven! (Maybe embarrassed!)

Anybody in blogland agree or disagree with me?

One phone call...

The following came in an email from my friend, Pastor Brian Atwood...

"Did you know that during the devasting earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean area back in 2004, the entire population of Nallavadu, India was saved from destruction by a single phone call from a man named Vijayakumar in Singapore, Indonesia?

Vijayakumar saw a tsunami warning in Singapore and immediately phoned the village's research center, setting off an official alert.
